Woman arrested after clocking 220 km/h in a VW Golf on N4 highway

A VW Golf female driver was arrested after she was caught speeding at 220 km/h exceeding the maximum of 120 km/h, on the N4 East in Gauteng.

A 36-year-old female driver was arrested after being found excessively speeding a red VW Golf 7 at 220 km per hour on a prescribed maximum limit of 120 km per hour zone along the N4 East freeway.

The Gauteng Traffic Police High-Speed Unit arrested the woman on Friday night, 6 January 2023.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane said the Golf driver was detained at Bronkhorspruit police station and is facing charges relating to reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of driving over the prescribed speed limit of 120 km per hour.

“The speedster is expected to appear in Bronkhorspruit Magistrate court soon,” he said.

The Gauteng Traffic Police has called on road users to adhere to the prescribed speed limits on Gauteng’s major routes.

“As we are still in the festive season period, it is important that drivers continue to comply with the prescribed maximum speed limits, thus making road safety a priority. The Gauteng Traffic Police will intensify high-speed operations and the clampdown on speedsters on Gauteng’s major routes and freeways,” Maremane added.

Meanwhile, City of Cape Town MayCo member for Safety and security Alderman JP Smith has revealed that VW Polos are listed as the number 1 vehicle involved in fatal traffic collisions.

Smith said VW Polo models are followed by Toyota Hilux, Toyota Quantum, Toyota Corolla, Isuzu KB series, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Ranger and in 8th place the BMW 3 Series citing a report by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
