Tips to avoid heat stroke and exhaustion in warm weather

In cases of extreme heat, the public is urged to take steps to prevent heat exhaustion.

Here is how you can protect yourself:

  • Exercise first thing in the morning, before it gets too hot, or after sunset.
  • Manage your activity intensity and take breaks when you exercise.
  • Keep hydrated! Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or sports drinks, while you’re outside. Also, avoid drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages before exercising because both can dehydrate you.
  • Apply a cool pack or cloth to your neck, armpits, or groin.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently.
  • Spray some cool water on yourself.
  • Get into the shade or an air-conditioned building or car.
  • Children should never be left in cars.
  • Take a refreshing shower or bath.
  • Pay attention to high-temperature warnings and stay indoors as much as possible on days when you know it will be extremely hot.
  • Understand the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Take immediate action if you notice any warning signs.
