A female police officer was ambushed, brutally attacked, and beaten by her ex-boyfriend as she left her living police quarters on Sunday morning, 26 March 2023.

POLICE OFFICER WAS BEATEN ON HER HEAD AND HANDS

The 43-year-old female Sergeant stationed at the Grahamstown police station was brutally attacked as she left her police living quarters to report on duty on Sunday, 26 March 2023.

It is alleged that at about 5:40 on Sunday, the Sergeant was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who ambushed her on the stairs and attacked her with a hammer.

EX-BOYFRIEND BRUTALLY ATTACKED A POLICEWOMAN WITH A HAMMER

The police officer’s ex-boyfriend brutally attacked her by beating her on her hands and head with a hammer. As she attempted to run back to her room, the suspect managed to pull her firearm and fired a shot at her. The suspect ran off with her gun.

The injured Sergeant was admitted to the hospital with severe injuries from the assault. It was later established that she did not sustain any gunshot wounds.

Police later found the suspect dead on Orgley Street in Grahamstown. The police officer’s ex-boyfriend allegedly shot and killed himself. An inquest docket was opened.

The police are investigating a case of attempted murder attacks on police, and firearm theft was also opened for investigation.

POLICE MANAGEMENT CONCERNED ABOUT ATTACKS ON THE POLICE

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla, expressed his concern and empathy towards another police officer who was brutally attacked as she left for work.

Dladla says they cannot tolerate such brutal attacks on police officers.

“We are appealing to everyone on all levels of society to stand together with the police to stop these ruthless attacks. The high number of Gender Based Violence cases in our communities, including within our organisation sounds a clarion call for everyone to ensure that the most vulnerable do not suffer abuse or violence and for people to come forward and report such abuse or threat of physical violence.”
