What a year. There’s a new human trafficking case after 33 Ethiopians were found in Midrand, Johannesburg. October saw 50 other Ethiopians rescued in Lenasia and 11 more in Meadowlands.

What on Earth is going on really? Human trafficking has been reported after 33 Ethiopian nationals were rescued in Midrand, Johannesburg on Thursday.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: 33 ETHIOPIANS, MIDRAND

This report follows after 50 other Ethiopians were salvaged in Lenasia as well as 11 more in Meadowlands during October.

As reported by Johannesburg’s Metro Police Department, the victims were discovered in Glen Austin on Thursday night.

“Working on info received from CI 1x Ethiopian National arrested & 33x Human Trafficking Victims (Ethiopian Nationals) rescued in Glen Austin, Midrand by #JMPD K9 Unit together with #SAPS Highway Patrol,” the statement said.

A suspect has been arrested while the victims have been moved to an unnamed safety location.

“Suspect detained at Midrand SAPS & Victims taken to a place of safety.”

POLICE UNCOVER 50 ETHIOPIANS INSIDE LENASIA HOUSE

South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed a suspect was arrested in connection with an audacious kidnapping of 50 men in Lenasia, Johannesburg on Friday 15 October. The report says the group are Ethiopian nationals.

The foreign nationals arrived in Mzansi to reunite with loved ones – but trouble hit when the driver that was transporting them suddenly found an opportunity to make some cash by kidnapping the 50 men.

11 ETHIOPIANS FOUND IN MEADOWLANDS

Two Ethiopian nationals were arrested for the kidnapping of nearly a dozen of their countrymen across South Africa.

According to SAPS spokesperson Andre Trout, the victims were abducted in different parts of the country.

The arrests were a result of a joined effort by both Western Cape and Gauteng law enforcement: The kidnapping suspects are also Ethiopian nationals who police pounced on at the storage facility in Meadowlands, Soweto on Friday.

“The unrelenting efforts of Western Cape detectives to fight extortion in this province were rewarded with the arrest of two suspects during the early hours of yesterday morning in Meadowlands, Johannesburg,” Traut said on Saturday, 23 October 2021.
