eThekwini residents have been warned against leaving their dirtbags outside as Cleansing and Solid Waste employees have embarked on a work stoppage.

Waste and sweeping services have been impacted by an illegal work stoppage

The City’s Communications Unit said that there is currently an interruption of waste as well as sweeping services. IOL reports that this is due to an illegal work stoppage caused by the overtime cut that was put in place on the first of this month.

“Residents and businesses are requested to keep refuse bags and bins inside their properties until the situation is resolved. The City apologises for the inconvenience caused,” the Communications Unit said.

Employees went on an illegal go-slow earlier this month

At the beginning of the month, the Municipality revealed that employees in some areas started an illegal go-slow, also over the overtime cut. The go-slow is impacting the waste collection and street sweeping in eThekwini.

The City has apologised to residents and businesses for the inconvenience adding that alternative measures for providing waste services are being looked into.

It’s been reported that in June, the City passed a resolution that required units to reduce their spending on overtime by 50%. This amount must be used to fill vacancies instead. Records have shown that Metro Police and DSW are two units that have been spending excessive amounts on overtime.

eThekwini Municipality to implement water rationing from Monday, 20 June

Previously, it was reported that the eThekwini Municipality will be implementing water rationing from Monday, 20 June 2022, in all areas that are supplied by the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant, which is operated and managed by Umgeni Water.

Water rationing has reportedly become necessary in eThekwini due to reduced water supply from the plant. The eThekwini Municipality said the shortfall has been caused, by Umgeni Water being unable to receive adequate raw water from Nagle Dam because of extensive damage to two raw water pipelines in the April 2022 heavy rainfall.

This will remain for the next 10-12 months. Important water infrastructure, especially in Treatment Plants was extensively damaged during the April floods. Further damage was reported when torrential rains returned to parts of KwaZulu-Natal recently. Read the full story here.
