Electricity supply will be interrupted on Saturday, 12 February from 10am to 2pm.

AFFECTED AREAS IN ETHEKWINI

In a statement, the municipality said this is a result of the City’s 132kV  cables between Edwin Swales Substation and Rossburgh Substation being damaged on 28 January by third party contractors.

“EThekwini Municipality implemented a non-standard configuration to temporarily restore supply to affected customers.

Permanent repairs of the high voltage cables have been completed and it is now urgently required to normalise the electrical network. Therefore, it is necessary to interrupt electricity supply.”

ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY ‘TACKLING’ WATER ISSUES

The City’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said damage to infrastructure and illegal connections remain a huge challenge in their aim to tackle the ongoing water issues.

Mayisela said they are appealing to the public to be vigilant and mindful that for the municipality to win the war, the public should also play its part.

“It must not only be the responsibility of the City. We want people to join the crusade against vandalism of infrastructure and illegal connections. Water is a scarce source in SA. We must be cognisant that for us to deliver clean water to the public, we spend hundreds of millions buying water from Umgeni, which needs to be purified. If we work together, we can go a long way to arrest this scourge,” he told IOL

The municipality has also announced the establishment of a non-revenue water (NRW) task team in the water and sanitation unit that monitors and evaluates various departments’ contribution to the Water Conservation and Water Demand Management (WCWDM) strategic plan.
