EThekwini Municipality vows to find missing employees presumed drowned

EThekwini Municipality mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda says they will do everything in their power to find the missing employees presumed drowned.

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda has vowed that they will continue to search for two missing employees who have been presumed drowned. 

The two employees who are missing have been presumed drowned following torrential rains in KZN this past weekend. An eThekwini Municipality vehicle was found submerged in a river in Ogunjini on Monday.

The two men are believed to have been on duty over the weekend when they went missing. 

Kaunda said Search and Rescue teams have been looking for them and the team will not stop until they have been found. 

Kaunda also vowed that the municipality will do everything in its power to assist the families locate their loved ones.

According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a member of the public alerted them after he noticed a portion of the roof of the white Toyota Etios protruding from the river. 

“It was confirmed that the driver lived in the area and could not be located since Saturday night’s floods. The vehicle was registered to the eThekwini Municipality Water Department,” RUSA said.

EThekwini Municipality Spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said they learnt about the incident on Monday. The search and rescue operation then commenced. 

“The vehicle they were travelling in was spotted, search and rescue teams then went into the water to investigate. Unfortunately, there were no occupants inside. The team then resolved to search around the vehicle. 

“However, due to strong currents that were posing a serious threat to the lives of the divers on Tuesday, the search operation had to be aborted.”

The Search and Rescue teams have also embarked on an aerial search with no success.
