This, after there was an explosion at the Klaarwater substation which subjected 50% of areas in eThekwini to a blackout on Tuesday night.

SHALLCROSS STILL WITHOUT ELECTRICITY

We started to restore supply last night,  area by area. This is done this in a controlled and very careful sequence to limit the risk of further faults and further damage

According to the eThekwini Municipality there is unfortunately confirmed extensive damage at the Shallcross substation which could  take up to 48 hours to repair.

“Unfortunately some customers in this area will remain off for now,” the municipality said.

Teams are reportedly working around the clock to restore supply to as many customers as possible, as quickly as possible, however, the municipality said at this juncture they cannot provide specifics until they have completed inspections, which cover an extensive area of overhead HV lines from the Klaarwater area as far as Waterfall in the outer west.

“The strong winds and lightning around 19:00 to 20:30 have been the primary cause of the faults, but this cannot be confirmed 100% at this stage,” the municipality said.
