EThekwini Municipality has wished a speedy recovery to the City of Cape Town as it battles beaches that have been contaminated by sewer spillages.

ETHEKWINI TOUCHED BY CAPE TOWN BEACH SEWER CRISIS

At least three beaches have been temporarily closed down after sewage spills caused by a blocked pipe. Fish Hoek, Strand, and Small Bay in Blaauwberg are the affected beaches. This is a result of pump station failures weakened by higher stages of loadshedding, according to the City.

Ethekwini Municipality, been on the receiving end of sewer problems on their beaches, had some words for the City of Cape Town of which have been perceived as shady and childish.

“We wish our colleagues in Cape Town well as they battle sewer spillages in some of their beaches. Running a Metro is a complex task fraught with many challenges, even if you have been spared from the devastating floods experienced in April last year. We wish them speedy recovery,” said Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, the Committee Chair for Governance and Human Capital in Ethekwini.

STATEMENT RECEIVES IMMEDIATE BLACKLASH

This remark has been met with criticism for this ever-defensive municipality, some labelling it reckless.

Dean Macpherson said: “This is why eThekwini is a mess. This pathetic statement is myopic and childish instead of fixing what’s wrong with the city, we have a mayor who is singing and dancing his time away and officials trying to come up with funny statements. Grow up!”

Councillor Sakhile Mngadi said: “Cape Town has released its latest tourism figures and it is quite clear that as a city it is miles ahead of your administration. There is also a difference between a sewage spill due to a (singular) blocked pipe and what is happening in this city which is the collapse of the entire sewerage system where only 5 out of 23 major pump stations work.
Trivialising the collapse of our city is something every resident should not forget as we work to get you out of Government!”

“This is hilarious – you are wishing someone else a speedy recovery when you can’t even keep the litter off the beaches, the water is always polluted and the E.coli levels are through the roof in Durban! Focus on getting your house in order and take a leaf out of Cape Towns organized book!”
