On Monday, Eskom said Hendrina Town, kwaZamokuhle, Mafred and surrounding areas were without electricity due to the outage.

“The outage occurred when a dam on the Optimum Mine overflowed submerging the lines leading them to trip and resulting in the ongoing interruption of electricity supply,” said Eskom.

The power utility’s technicians and Optimum mine management are attending to the outage and assessing the damage.

Due to the complexity of the work required to restore electricity and the ongoing rain, the utility is unable to provide an estimated time of restoration.

The public is advised to treat all electricity infrastructure in the area as live at all times and to avoid any lines and poles that may have fallen to the ground.

“Eskom values the safety of its customers, employees and contractors. We regret the inconvenience caused and are working to restore supply as soon as possible.”
