Eskom needs a 25% price hike, because load shedding is expensive: Brian Molefe

The embattled utility wants the public to cough up 25% more on electricity to cover its losses due to load shedding.

Eskom needs a 25% price hike,

Not one week ago it came to light that Eskom has been paying ex-executives millions of Rands in settlement amounts, and spending millions more on bonuses for current executives even though the parastatal has to date made almost no progress in addressing South Africa’s energy crisis.

Now Brian Molefe, current CEO of Eskom wants a 25% increase to mitigate the cost of load shedding on the utility. MyBroadband reports that, even though NERSA has been reluctant in granting Eskom more money by means of levies on the taxpayer, Molefe is adamant that he… we mean Eskom needs the money.

The parastatal has already received 12.6% of the 25% increase, but as Eskom has proven in the past, no amount of tax money will ever satiate their need for cash. Perhaps they should spend less time begging for bigger bonuses and more time working on solutions.
