Eskom has reported several municipalities and industrial sites to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for allegedly refusing to fully implement the power utility’s load shedding schedules.

Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter and distribution executive Monde Bala highlighted the challenges the power utility was facing in several regions across the country during the executives’ latest update on the state of the country’s electricity system on Wednesday 10 November.

The Eskom executives revealed that several municipalities were allegedly not implementing load shedding as they should, and that only Buffalo City Municipality and eThekwini Municipality were fully compliant with its schedule. They said Eskom had asked Nersa to take action against the allegedly defiant municipalities and business sites saying that it would enforce mandatory load shedding if they refused to comply with its orders.

Bala refused to disclose the names of the allegedly errant municipalities and industrial sites. He said that Eskom had written letters to the clients and Nersa, informing them about the possible action that could be taken against them if they did not comply with its load shedding orders.

Eskom to meet with the City of Cape Town

He said Eskom planned to meet with the City of Cape Town to discuss the possibility of the Steynsrus Power Plant to assist with easing the impact load shedding.

Eskom earlier announced that load shedding would be lifted at 5am on Saturday 13 November after the parastatal managed to restore several megawatts of generation capacity at several of its plants around the country.

The country has been facd with a bout of level four load shedding over the past week, which was recently reduced to level three which means less power cuts for homes and businesses.

The Education Department announced on Tuesday that it intended meeting with Eskom to discuss the impact of load shedding on matric exams, saying it was hampering students ability to study as well as impacting conditions at examination centres around the country.
