Eskom’s network overload woes in Gauteng continue on Thursday 25 June as the power supplier announced that there would be more load reduction implementation across the province, with Soweto set to go dark in most areas.

In a statement released on Thursday, Eskom said that they would be implementing the load reduction strategy across areas that have been particularly problematic for them in terms of high vandalism rates.

Load reduction to hit areas where vandalism is prevalent

It seems that the few bad apples who are damaging Eskom infrastructure have spoiled the whole damn bunch for Gauteng residents, with significant outages expected.

Eskom began rolling out these blackouts on Tuesday 16 June after reporting that its grid has been under strain due to vandals who are illegally connecting their homes and businesses to the grid.

“We are implementing load reduction form 17:00-22:00 to avoid network overloading in high density areas that are prone to illegal connections, meter bypasses and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.”

Eskom said that while the outages are being implemented, residents should switch off or unplug appliances to avoid electrical surges that may occur when the lights flicker back on.

“During the load reduction implementation, customers are urged to switch off all their electrical appliances to avoid power surges when power returns.”

“Failure to do so may lead to transformer trips or failures, and damages to households appliances when supply is restored.”
