An updated load shedding schedule for the coming weekend was published by Eskom.

ESKOM SAID LOAD SHEDDING STAGES FOR THE WEEK ARE CONFIRMED

The power utility said the load shedding stages for this weekend from Thursday to Monday are confirmed.

It furthermore said the stage of load shedding for the rest of the period is dependent on returning generating units to service and will be confirmed closer to the time.

Eskom chief executive officer Andre de Ruyter earlier this month indicated that South Africa could see the end of load shedding by end of this week.

De Ruyter said that the national power utility has seen more generation units returning to operation.

“Towards the end of the coming week, we should emerge from load shedding.

“We’ve already lifted our indication for load shedding going forward. We’ve got a couple of big units returning, so that’s positive news.”

IS THERE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL?

De Ruyter said Eskom expects load shedding to become less likely by the end of the month as the troubled nuclear plant Koeberg 2 comes back online.

Earlier this month approximately seven units returned to service.

South Africa could have a second state-owned power utility to challenge Eskom’s monopoly, that’s if the African National Congress (ANC) has anything to do with it.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that the party is seriously considering the move as a measure to take on the country’s energy crisis.

Ramaphosa made the remarks while delivering a message of support on the ANC’s behalf on the third day of the SACP’s elective congress.

SOLAR USERS ARE IN FOR A SURPRISE WITH NEW PROPOSED TARIFFS

Meanwhile those with solar panels but still on Eskom’s grid will pay hundreds of rands more each month in the new proposed power tariffs.

The power utility currently charges a single electricity tariff for variable and fixed costs which accumulate in producing power.

But MyBroadband reports that Eskom aims to modernise the tariffs to reflect the changing electricity environment. The power utility also wants to ensure fair recovery for all provided services to all consumers on the grid and the system.
