ENDLOVINI FIVE SUSPECT MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the accused, Madoda Zwayi, was charged with five counts of murder.

On 14 March, the police said an unknown number of suspects approached shacks in Endlovini and opened fire.

Four men and a woman – aged between 25 and 35 – were killed in the attack and the police immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Zwayi, however, was only arrested on the evening of Monday, 11 April, after organised crime detectives made a breakthrough in the case.

The State said the accused told the court that he was going to defend himself but he changed his mind after the Magistrate advised him to appoint his own lawyer or use a State-appointed lawyer as the charges he faces are very serious.

“The accused requested Legal Aid to represent him. He told the court that he has a fixed address and has no pending matters, no previous convictions or warrants of arrests against him,” said Ntabazalila.

The State asked for a postponement until 20 April for it to verify the accused’s bail information. The court acquiesced.

The NPA will oppose Zwayi’s bail application and indicated that there were other suspects involved in the mass shooting in Endlovini.

Cape Town police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said Tuesday, more arrests are imminent and the detectives are on the heels of the other known suspects.
