Three men were arrested by the Gauteng police for theft under false pretence after they allegedly led an elderly woman to believe she will win the national lottery and took her money.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Nomvula Mbense said the three suspects – aged between 22 and 37 – took R28 000 from a 64-year-old woman.

“One of the suspects allegedly claimed to be a ‘prophet’ and indicated to the victim that she will win R1 million from the National Lottery after four days,” said Mbense.

The victim opened a case of theft after she realised the suspects had taken her money under false pretences.

The three suspects were arrested by Orlando SAPS members on Monday, 13 June and are expected to appear before the local magistrate’s court imminently.

The police spokesperson said community members must remain vigilant and urged them to not disclose how much money they have and not to give persons who claim they can multiply their money access to funds.
