Ekurhuleni: Zero tolerance on fireworks – report illegal usage

The City of Ekurhuleni has warned its residents that they will be fined, be named and shamed for discharging fireworks

The City of Ekurhuleni has tightened its Bylaws with regard to the use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.


At ALL hours, no fireworks may be discharged on private premises within the boundaries of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

“Please note that the community will be watching and will report you.”

The discharge of fireworks is covered under the Gauteng Noise Control Regulation 199 Regulation 9(b) and the EMPD Service Bylaw Section 42 (2) under the heading ‘Disturbance of the Peace’.

The City has warned that you will be fined and you will be named and shamed.

“Please respect your neighbours and their animals by celebrating without fireworks – it’s the right thing to do,” the City pleaded.

Where permitted, here are safety tips when discharging any firecrackers:

  • No fireworks should be used or discharged within 500 meters of an explosive magazine, explosive factory, petroleum depot, or gasometer.
  • Fireworks should not be used or discharged in any building or public thoroughfare.
  • Except with the prior written permission of the local authority, do not use or discharge firecrackers in any public place or resort.
  • Only wholesale and retail dealers licensed under the Explosives Act and in possession of a valid license issued by the Chief Inspector of Explosives are permitted to sell fireworks.
  • No firecrackers may be sold from the boot of a vehicle/trailer/” spaza shop” by a street hawker or vendor at a flea market.
  • Do not hold lit firecrackers in your hand for your own safety.
  • Keep a bucket of water and a hose nearby.
  • Once the fireworks are lit, keep your distance.
  • Fireworks should always be used/lit by children under the supervision of an adult/parent.
  • To ensure their safety, keep pets away from firecrackers and under control.
  • Never attempt to create your own fireworks.
  • Always keep firecrackers away from people, buildings, and flammable materials.
  • Never Allow children to pick up pieces of firecrackers right after they have been discharged; some may still be ignited and could explode at any time.
