Blade Nzimande has hit the EFF with the “champagne socialist” tag, alleging the party wear Louis Vuitton attire to Parliament. Floyd Shivambu is seething.

It looks like a little war of words is brewing between Floyd Shivambu and Blade Nzimande. The EFF deputy president and the higher education minister have locked horns after the Red Berets were accused of preaching one set of values while living in a completely different reality.

It comes down to a matter of fashion. During an address to the SA Communist Party this week, Blade showed just how cutting he could be with remarks directed towards the third-biggest party in South Africa.

Louis Vuitton overalls for the EFF?

Nzimande claimed that the EFF are now shelling out for overalls which are designed by Louis Vuitton. A bold statement, to say the least. He reminded the crowd that this type of gear would be “very expensive”, somewhat contradicting their socialist policy values.

Shivambu responded in a very “Shivambu-esque” manner. The party DP denied the existence of such a luxury product, after opening with the first line of what appears to be a joke. We’re guessing that Blade Nzimande is the punchline himself, right?

Blade Nzimande vs the EFF

The souring relationship between Blade Nzimande and his overall-clad opposition took a turn for the worst when he offered his support to Pravin Gordhan. The public enterprises minister is the target of the EFF’s latest campaign, as they continue to lobby for his removal from office.

They are unhappy with the fact that Gordhan has yet to face disciplinary action, as requested by the Public Protector. Nzimande has suggested that the EFF are simply trying to smear Gordhan, fearful that he’ll expose alleged dodgy dealings with their tax payments.

Louis Vuitton claims “yet to be proven”

The “champagne lifestyle” critique is often used as a stick to beat the Red Berets with. They are the self-styled “champions of the poor”, but their penchant for fine alcohol and fancy products has even sent some journalists rifling through their bins to prove a point.

However, claims that they have their overalls designed by Louis Vuitton are yet to be verified. Perhaps Nzimande has got the wrong end of the stick, here – last month, a Louis Vuitton sweater made its way into the clearance sale at a Cape Town Pick n Pay store. These mistakes are easy to make…
