Following the release of the report on thet at Phala Phala farm, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says President Cyril Ramaphosa runs a sophisticated money laundering operation in which he uses his employees to avoid direct accountability.
An independent panel established in terms of Section 89 of the Constitution was formed to probe whether Ramaphosa has a case to answer regarding the theft of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm in 2020. On Wednesday, 30 November, the panel submitted a report to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, which has since been made public.
The independent panel said it is concerned by the fact that none of the institutions who were reportedly investigating the issue did not hand any information on the outcome of their investigation.
“Officials of the SARB and SAPS appeared in one of the committees in Parliament yet the record of those proceedings has not been made available to us. The President indicates that there are about eight institutions that are investigating the Phala Phala issue, yet we have not been furnished with reports on the outcome of these investigations. Nor have we been told how far these investigations are.”
Section 89 panel report
The panel said that the information presented to it, prima facie, establishes that:
The Red Berets said the fact that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) had to investigate the origins of the millions of foreign currency stolen at Phala Phala means that Ramaphosa did not declare the currency to the Reserve Bank.
Like many political parties who have also weighed in on the matter, the EFF called for Ramaphosa to step down as President of the country.
“If Ramaphosa does not step down, the EFF will expose him and the ANC as criminals who have no regard for the domestic and international laws, and completely disrespect the Constitution.”
