EFF mobilises shutdown at open PEP store in Gauteng

A photograph has made rounds of EFF members invading a PEP store in Gauteng. It is reported that they peacefully mobilised staff to shutdown.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members are out in full force across Gauteng to demonstrate and mobilise for the National Shutdown.

EFF DECLARES NATIONAL SHUTDOWN ON 20 MARCH

Today, 20 March a national shutdown was declared by EFF leader Julius Malema who ordered businesses to shut down across the country in support of their call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down and put an end to load shedding.

High police presence across the province has made it hard for the EFF to have enough freedom to demonstrate on the streets.

Where police presence has been lacking, the EFF has taken advantage of those communities.

STORES IN GAUTENG ORDERED TO SHUTDOWN

Speaking of taking advantage, a photograph has made rounds of EFF members invading a PEP store in Gauteng. It is understood that the photograph was snapped in Honeydew, north of Johannesburg.

About 50 EFF members from Zandspruit took to the streets towards Beyers Naude Drive. Speaking to the SABC, EFF Branch leader, Gift Mkasi said they engaged law enforcement and had an agreement to hold a peaceful protest in the area.

No disruptions have been reported since the members made their way to the streets.

TWO ARRESTED IN KIMBERLEY EARLIER TODAY

Meanwhile, Police in Kimberley arrested two people for public violence earlier today.

This after a small group threw stones at the vehicles earlier, and police retaliated by firing rubber bullets at them.

In the last 12 hours, law enforcement officers from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) arrested 87 protestors across the country for public violence-related offences.
