In quotes: Malema refuels feud with Johann Rupert, talks GBV and condoms

It was another lively day at the EFF elective conference, and Julius Malema made sure he had the last word with his fiery speech. Johann Rupert, take cover.

Malema has been sinking his teeth into many matters on Monday afternoon. The re-elected EFF leader gave the closing speech at the EFF’s National People’s Assembly (NPA), and he certainly didn’t hold back on the big talking points. We’ve got all the highlights here, including his spat with Johann Rupert:

Julius Malema: Seven biggest quotes from Monday’s speech

The war with Johann Rupert resumes

“When you disagree with Johann Rupert, he closes your bank account. When you disagree with Rupert and mention his name in the second NPA, he withdraws his cameras from eNCA. They are censoring us, yet they call themselves the democrats. They must know that we will fight them to the grave in the same way we did to ANN7. We don’t need their coverage.”

Julius Malema says it’s ‘fair game’ with the media

“We have no problems with any form of media. Just don’t declare us an enemy, because if you do so, we will treat you as an enemy. Continue to report the way you want to report about us. It is your right to call us all types of names, to write anything you want to write, but it is equally our right to disagree with you.”

CIC warns delegates to keep a ‘collective’ ambition

“Anyone who got elected in the CCT in the hope that he or she will become an MP, hard luck – because there are no vacancies. Ideas in the EFF are contested and therefore when we contest each other we are not enemies.”

EFF plan to occupy Eskom plants in 2020

“Comrades, when we leave here, we must go and protect the SOEs, which Ramaphosa and Jamnandas [Private Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan] want to sell to their friends. Before the end of January, we shall occupy the premises of Eskom to demand a reliable supply of electricity to our people.”

Julius Malema vs Johann Rupert: Bank Wars

“The financial sector must be fought. 2020 is a war against the financial sector and against the Johann Rupert-owned banks of SA. We need them to know that no-one is above the power of the people. The bank of SA are an enemy of our people. Mothers in Natal had to carry a dead body to Old Mutual for their policies to be paid out.”

Julius Malema slams the GBV violence in SA

“We are sending a very strong message to all those who abuse women; you do not have a space to co-exist with our communities. It is scary when a 19-year-old rapes, kills and burns a young woman – are we then animals, as white people say? We cannot have such men among us.”

And finally… a little sex advice from Juju:

“Let us use condoms, children must abstain from sex. Floyd Shivambu [EFF deputy president] is a married man. He must be faithful, please. Let us all be faithful and stick to one partner. We must fight AIDS by using condoms and those who are positive should take medication. Scientists are fighting to find a cure, they are nearly there.”
