EFF dominates Wits SRC elections, student command boasts huge wins

The Economic Freedom Fighters cleaned up during this year’s SRC elections at Wits University. The massive numbers might surprise you.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has a huge following amongst the student youth of South Africa. If you needed proof of that, then look no further than the results of this year’s Student Representative Council (SRC) election at Wits University.

The EFF Student Command (EFFSC) took 12 out of 15 seats at the election held on Thursday.

“Three seats went to the PYA (Progressive Youth Alliance),” added Buhle Zuma, senior communications officer at the university.

The PYA consists of the ANC Youth League, the Young Communists League and the Muslim Students Association. Unsurprisingly, the EFFSC were delighted with removing any form of the ANC from power.

The head honchos of the EFF were also quick to congratulate their student members, party leader Julius Malema even took the time to fire a dig at Police Minister and former ANCYL leader Fikile Mbalula.

The result was well received across South African social media as millennials in South Africa continue their trend of becoming involved in politics. With issues like #FeesMustFall and outsourcing, student politics has become a much bigger platform in the last few years.

With funding still being an unsolved problem in higher education, let’s hope this team of young leaders can put pressure on government to find a sustainable solution.
