DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – JULY 29, 2017: Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema speaking to the thousands of supporters during the party’s 4th anniversary celebration on July 29, 2017 in Durban, South Africa. Malema touched controversial subjects such as racism, white monopoly capital and land ownership while speaking to the EFF supporters attending the celebration.

It comes as no surprise that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have been involved in allegations associating them with a move to support the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in the mayorship candidacy of Nelson Mandela Bay.

Now that Athol Trollip is on the verge of being axed, the bids are open about who will succeed him in the highly contested metro.

On Tuesday evening, the EFF released a statement denying any association with the candidacy of Marlon Daniels, who is the PA’s councillor.

EFF changes its tune about the Patriotic Alliance

According to The Citizen, the statement released by the EFF did not reflect the information they had received, alleging that the two parties were in line to throw their weight behind supporting Daniels to be the next mayor of the metro, should Trollip step down.

If anything, it appears that the EFF does not really think much of the PA party, referring to them as ‘unrepentant fraudsters‘, ‘thugs‘ and ‘gangsters‘.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, who is the EFF’s spokesperson, revealed that his party’s strategy was clear: remove Trollip at all cost and opt out of participating in the mayoral vote.

EFF’s strategy is “in the interest of the people”

Most would say that this is unusual and probably not the smartest thing to do for a party with the ambitions that the EFF has. However, Ndlozi made it clear that the EFF steps in to restore order for the benefit of the people.

He also stated that their aim was to ensure that

“the EFF will never give the City of Nelson Mandela to thugs.”

The clock is ticking for Trollip and life seems to be ready to move on without him at the helm of the Nelson Mandel Bay metro.

The EFF has been trying relentlessly to have the DA mayor removed from the post, with the recent motion of no confidence vote failing to achieve their objective.
