Well-known EFF councillor found in a pool of blood in his home

A well-known EFF councillor was shot dead at his home in Limpopo. His car was found hidden in bushes in a nearby village.

A high-level team of investigators in Limpopo has been established to track down and apprehend suspects responsible for the murder of an Economic Freedom fighters (EFF) councillor who was gunned down. 

The well-known community leader was gunned down at his home in gaBotha village in Matlelerekeng policing precinct outside Sekhukhune on Thursday night, 25 May. 

EFF COUNCILLOR GUNNED DOWN AT HIS HOME 

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela ledwaba said 46-year-old Jonas Lebitsi Mpye, was shot and killed on Thursday evening at his home and his body was discovered the following day at about 07:00.

Malesela said police were alerted about the incident by community members and upon arrival, they found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his neck. 

“According to reports, a gunshot was heard on Thursday night at about 21:00 but nobody saw what happened. Subsequent to the police’s extensive investigations, the deceased’s Ford ranger bakkie was later recovered hidden in the bushes in the nearby village,” he said.

POLICE URGE ANYONE WITH INFO TO COME FORWARD

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe described the incident, senseless. 

“We call upon the Community to come forward with information that can assist police to arrest the killers,” she said. 

A case of murder and robbery has been registered.
