The horse-trading is well underway! The EFF cemented its position as the third-largest political party this week. And that means just about everyone needs their votes and seats, if they want to form a coalition government at key municipalities. Now, the EFF has released its list of coalition demands to parties like the ANC. From land expropriation to nationalisation, it will be near impossible for any party to meet all of these.
Compared to 2016, the EFF increased its national vote share from 8% to over 10%. And with the ANC having dropped below 50% for the first time in South Africa’s democratic history, the red party is certainly not feeling shy.
They don’t just want the Reserve Bank nationalised, they also want all student debt cancelled too…
Here’s the list of the EFF coalition demands in full:
The party has also revealed that those who want it in a coalition, need to be willing to give the EFF exclusive power to govern in other municipalities. This would mean that for the EFF to vote with the ANC in 3 municipalities, it would demand that the ANC support a full EFF government in at least one.

“The EFF recognises the 2021 Local Government Elections as a key opportunity for progressive forces to secure historic gains in the general struggle of total decolonisation. We call on all who align themselves with the historic duty to restore the dignity of the black oppressed and working class majority to unite.”
The EFF’s coalition negotiation team will be led by party Deputy President Floyd Shivambu. Advocate Dali Mpou is also part of the team. According to the party though, Julius Malema will not be involved in the negotiations directly.
