The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Ekurhuleni says it is impatiently waiting in anticipation, on the handing down of judgment in the public violence case that affected the community of ward 99 in respect of the tragic events that took place in Freedom Park, Villa Liza prior to the 2016 Local Government Elections (LGE).

EFF TO STAND WITH THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Community members who are mostly fighters and women, were arrested when they protested and demanded accountability after RDP houses were handed over and occupied by unknown people in the community.

According to Leshaka Manamela (Regional Chairperson), this symbolized corruption and a great injustice which the community could not accept.

The EFF’s then Ward the and Proportional Representative (PR) councillor candidates were also among the arrested in 2016.

“The EFF has long called for the RDP beneficiary list to be made public in order to avoid corruption and for the rightful owners to benefit.”

Manamela reports that the police arrested 16 community members which included women and the elderly.

“It is with great sadness that two people have passed on while on this senseless trial including our former PR Councillor candidate fighter Steve Makgothwane. The EFF Ekurhuleni has been the vanguard of this community with a provision of a consistent support since the arrests, and has also provided for their legal representation,” he said.

“It is a great tragedy and miscarriage of justice that the community of Vila Liza has been on trial for more than 6 years without resolve. The justice system has been extremely unjust in this case and many others, as it uses scare tactics of a barbaric nature to discourage communities in fighting the very same corruption that the system should be championing a fight against.”

He added that many of the so-called witnesses have either disappeared or also passed on long ago, “but our people are still put on trial and have been stagnant for over 6 years, thus denying them a chance to pursue Economic opportunities and a free life with their families”.

He further said: “The case is finally (after 6 long years) coming to finality, the date for the handing down of judgment has been set for the  28th and 29th of November 2022, and the Economic Freedom Fighters in Ekurhuleni will actively mobilize the community to attend and give moral support for the ultimate influence of a positive judgment.”

“Lastly, we take this opportunity to thank our tireless fighters from ward 99 and nearby wards, who have supported the community and those arrested from 2016 to date”.
