Eerste River: Police Sergeant hijacked and murdered in Cape Town

An off-duty police officer was allegedly hijacked and fatally wounded in Eerste River, Cape Town in the early hours of Thursday.

A 35-year-old police officer was allegedly shot and killed in Eerste River, Cape Town, on Thursday morning, 2 September. 

POLICE OFFICER KILLED

The deceased held the rank of sergeant and was attached to the Lentegeur South African Police Service (SAPS) Visible Policing unit. He was off-duty at the time of his killing in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The deceased was allegedly hijacked, shot and fatally wounded in Eerste River, according to SAPS spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

“He was shot in his neck and was transported to a nearby hospital where he died due to his injuries,” said Captain van Wyk.

The SAPS spokesperson said the scene of the crime still needs to be established and reconstructed. He added that a murder case has been opened for investigation and that the Hawks would take control of the matter.

The Western Cape Provincial management of the police expressed their shock at the killing of the officer.

“Anyone with information about this fatal incident that could assist the police investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said van Wyk.
