The Department of Basic Education revealed plans to introduce new subjects for Grades 10 to 12 by 2025.

Why is the Education Department introducing new subjects?

The aim is to improve employment chances after matric for students. The subjects that will be introduced include art and design, office administration and hairdressing.

The Education Department says it wants to focus on giving pupils an education that equips them for the future world of work. Adding that not all learners further their studies after they matriculate.

Spokesperson for the Department Elijah Mhlanga says they have been gradually introducing new subjects and that 17 new subjects have already been rolled out.

Other subjects could potentially be introduced in the coming years

EWN reports that earlier in the year, the Basic Education Department revealed that it would soon review its curriculum for science, mathematics and technology. They stated that subjects that could also be introduced include aerospace engineering, coding, robotics and marine engineering.

We are expanding the curriculum offering to make sure that learners have an opportunity to follow a career path that gives a quick opportunity to employment. We are focusing on skills. We are focusing on the fourth industrial revolution,” said Mhlanga.

The changes are mainly related to attempt to boost mathematics, science and technology among learners in the country, but will also see roll out of equipment and software to support new subjects, including robotics and coding.
