It’s difficult to fathom how this could happen: The youngster is set to go on trial on Thursday, after he committed a frenzied knife attack on a pensioner.

A 19-year-old from Willowvale, Eastern Cape will be in court on Thursday, after fatally stabbing a woman 61 years his senior. Nomaka Mhlaba was in her eighties but incomprehensibly found herself to be the target of this alleged murderer. The deceased was pronounced dead when emergency services arrived.

Shocking murder case in Willowvale, Eastern Cape

No clear motive has been established, as the local community comes to terms with such a violent crime. One eyewitness who saw the tragic incident unfold quickly raised the alarm before he and several other Willowvale inhabitants gave chase to the suspected thug.

“Community played their part”

They managed to apprehend the teenager and handed him over to the police once they arrived on the scene. The local branch of SAPS have since shared a statement with us, explaining more about this act of brutality.

“It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed on her upper body on Tuesday 11 June 2019 at about 15:40 at Sunduza Locality, Upper Mbhangcolo Village, Willowvale. The suspect will appear before the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 13 June 2019, on a charge of murder.”

“Butterworth Cluster Commander Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu condemns the brutal murder of an old defenceless woman, but also applauds the community members for assisting the police in arresting the suspect.”

Willowvale is a community between East London and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, about 30km from the coast. The town is in the Amathole District Municipality, but it’s troubled by violent crimes against women. Last week, a 28-year-old male went on trial for raping his mother, aged 50. Justice must be served in both of these high-profile cases.
