Eastern Cape municipal councillor and son shot dead in their home

The councillor was shot and died in hospital while his son was killed at the scene and his 8-year-old daughter escaped unharmed.

A municipal councillor and his son were shot dead at their home in Slovo Park, Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape on Saturday night.

COUNCILLOR AND HIS SON KILLED IN SHOOTING

The iNgquza Hill Local Municipality councillor, 49, and his son were at their homestead when at least two unknown armed men stormed into the house.

The suspects opened fire, said police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.

“The report suggests that the suspects fatally shot the 18-year-old son of the councillor, and seriously wounded the councillor, who later died in hospital.”

Fortunately, the councillor’s eight-year-old daughter escaped unharmed.

Kinana said the names of the deceased councillor and his son are withheld until the next of kin are informed.

POLICE HAVE LAUNCHED A MANHUNT FOR KILLERS

The Eastern Cape provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mene ordered the activation of a 72-hour mobilisation plan to trace and find the two suspects.

“The motive of the attack is currently unknown, however, the circumstances surrounding the incident are forming part of the investigations.”

Two murder cases are being investigated by the police. No arrests have been made at this stage and investigations continue, said Kinana.

POLICE INVESTIGATE MURDER OF FOUR PEOPLE KILLED NEAR A GRAVEYARD

Meanwhile, the police in the Eastern Cape are investigating four cases of murder and one of attempted murder during a brutal shooting on Saturday morning.

Family members of the deceased were preparing to rebury the remains of their parents when four unidentified male suspects came and shot four of them.

The brutal shootings reportedly took place in the early hours at Qutubeni Administrative Area in Engcobo.

Police received followed up on complaints of a shooting, said Kinana.

“On their arrival at the crime scene, they were shown the bodies of the deceased male persons, aged between 39 and 77 years, lying in the garden near the graveyard,” he said.

Four of the six people who were busy exhuming the remains in the garden were killed. The remaining two survived, although one of them, aged 50, suffered serious injuries, Kinana said.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care.

“The circumstances surrounding the killings will form part of the investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage. Investigation continues,” said Kinana.
