Investigators in Cambridge, Eastern Cape are in search of a suspect believed to be involved in the robbery of an elderly couple from Walmer Farm in Konga.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, two armed suspects allegedly entered the couple’s residence on Thursday evening.
“It is alleged that two armed men entered this farm and demanded safe keys, money and firearms from the owners. The suspects took firearms, car keys as well house keys before fleeing in the couple’s bakkie,” Kinana wrote in a statement.
The couple, aged 82 and 87, was fortunate to survive such a horrifying experience. Moreover, their quick-thinking in calling the police soon after the suspects left led to a police chase that resulted in a shootout that left one of the two suspects injured.
“They drove to the direction of East London. Police launched a chase and they caught up with the suspects near Cambridge. The suspects opened fire at the chasing team and one suspect was injured and taken to hospital under police guard, the other managed to flee the scene,” Kinana revealed.
The second suspect managed to escape the confrontation with police. Eastern Cape police are confident that the second suspect will be tracked down and arrested soon.
No information on his identity has been released as yet. The wounded suspect will face charges related to house robbery. Eastern Cape police believe the suspect will be key in assisting authorities with tracking down his partner-in-crime.
