Call for calm following reports of an earthquake and tremor in KZN

On Saturday an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude rattled parts of KZN and on Sunday morning a tremor was reported in parts of Durban.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has called for calm following reports by the public and a number of agencies on the minor earthquake and tremors. 

On Saturday, 5 November an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude was reported in various parts of the province and on Sunday morning, 6 November a tremor was reported in Durban. 

EARTHQUAKE AND TREMOR REPORTED IN KZN 

According to Earthquake Today, the quake emanated at Greytown in the uThungulu District Municipality district in KwaZulu-Natal. It happened at 14:32 on Saturday afternoon.

Residents in Ballito, Vryheid, and Verulam also reported the earthquake.

Residents took to social media to confirm whether or not others also felt the earth moving on Sunday morning.

KZN COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the department has established contact with the Council for Geoscience which is a legislated body to determine the extent of tremors and potential impacts in the affected areas.

Mzila said the department is also liaising with all disaster management teams in the districts to assess whether there was any damage to infrastructure. 

“So far no injuries or fatalities have been reported. We wish to call for calm amongst all communities. The disaster management machinery is monitoring the situation and will be available for deployment where necessary,” he said.

On Sunday, 30 October there were reports state that seismic activity approximately 10 kilometres from Westonaria resulted in a tremor hitting Joburg South. No casualties or damage due to the tremor have been reported.
