Durbanville: 62-year-old teacher murdered during home robbery

Tributes have been pouring in for Helga van Wyk, a beloved teacher from Durbanville. The Hoerskool Monumentpark educator was found dead on Monday morning.

A much-loved Afrikaans teacher from Hoerskool Monumentpark has been found dead in her home after she was attacked during a brazen robbery. Helga van Wyk was viciously stabbed by an assailant at her Durbanville property. Her husband Johann was badly injured trying to fend off the criminal-at-large.

The incident took place in the Cape Town suburb on Monday morning. SAPS have confirmed that the body of the 62-year-old was discovered by her son when he visited the premisis later in the day. Johann was then rushed to hospital, where he underwent several surgical procedures. The lawyer remains in a critical condition.

Police have also confirmed that some of the wounds suffered by Mr van Wyk were in self-defence. There was a confrontation between him and the thug who gained access to their Durbanville home, but the 67-year-old was ultimately overpowered in the struggle.

Crime scene experts have visited the property and carried out extensive forensic tests. There have so far been no arrests, but the investigation is focusing on the theory that it was a one-man attack.

Hoerskool Monumentpark is located in Kraaifontein, a short distance away from the couple’s Durbanville residence. Helga van Wyk was a very popular and highly-appreciated member of staff, who ultimately loved the job she did.

The shocking nature of her death has left the local community reeling. The teacher was declared dead on the scene, and news soon reached some of her students. Touching messages were posted on Facebook, mourning her death:
