Several areas north of Durban will have no water from Wednesday afternoon due to a planned Durban water shut down as part of the new GoDurban Route Project, eThekwini Municipality announced on Tuesday.

eThwekwini Municipality said in a statement that the city had arranged for a planned Durban water shut down “to carry out strategic tie-ins into the existing 500 mm Aberdare drive Phoenix industrial park reticulation pipeline”.

The location of the tie-in was at the Aberdare drive Phoenix industrial park and the outlet of the Phoenix reservoir.

“These tie-ins are necessary as sections of the new 500 mm steel pipeline along the new BRT (Bus Rapid Rransit) route which requires to be connected to the existing Aberdare Reticulation outlet for the new GO Durban,” the eThekwini Municipality said.

The planned shut will take place on Wednesday 24 March 2021, for a duration of approximately 10 hours until Thursday morning 25 March 2021. The water will be shut down from 5pm on Wednesday afternoon until 3am on Thursday morning.

“The city will try its utmost best to balance the system during this planned shutdown. However certain suburbs/ zones supplied from the Phoenix 3 reservoir will be affected by no water supply during the period of the shutdown,” the eThekwini Municipality said.

The areas that will be affected by the water outage include the water supply zones from the reticulation outlet of Phoenix 3 reservoir.

These are as follows:

• Phoenix industrial park

• Curnick Ndlovu Highway – Kwa Mashu highway

• Bridge city Boulevard

• Aberdare drive Phoenix

• Eastbury area

• Redfern area

“The city apologises for the inconvenience caused as result of this unavoidable outage and sincerely assures residents of our best intentions. Notice boards will be placed on all affected streets prior to the planned shutdown,” the municipality said.

The latest planned shutdown follows a shutdown in other areas earlier this month for maintenance work.
