The decision was announced at the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in Auckland with Durban being the only bidder after Edmonton in Canada withdrew from the race in February.

An athletics track will be installed at the Moses Mabhida Stadium with a capacity of 56,000 for the event. Aquatics events will be held at the Kings Park Pool. Rugby sevens will be held at Kings Park Stadium and indoor events will be held at the Durban ICC and Exhibition Centre with the beachfront and harbour used for road cycling and triathlon.

It will be the first time an African country has hosted the Commonwealth Games. The opening ceremony of the games will take place on 18 July in memory of Nelson Mandela.
