Duduzile Zuma, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, believes she knows how her arrest will play out.

This comes after a national blitz, on 11 August, by the Directorate for Priority Investigation (Hawks) that saw more than 20 suspects arrested across the country for allegedly inciting violence during the deadly July unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

ZUMA PREDICTS ARRESTED FOR UNREST INSTIGATION

On Wednesday, 17 August, Zuma took to her favourite haunt, Twitter, and wrote “Rumour has it that I’m on the list.”

The list she is referring to was first revealed by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster in July 2022. Minister of police, Bheki Cele, said the State is monitoring 86 people for their alleged involvement in inciting the unrest.

The Hawks confirmed that Zuma, who was very active on her Twitter account in July 2021 – thanking people for protesting in support of her father, among other things, is being looked at. However, she was not among those arrested on 11 August.

“At this stage, we don’t have Ms Duduzile as one of the people who have been arrested, but you’ll remember that Glynnis Breytenbach opened a case against the said individual and we are investigating it,” said Major General Lestja Senona, the head of the Hawks in KZN, in an interview with eNCA.

“I can’t divulge now the status of the investigation, but as soon as we are finished we will table it before the NPA to make a prosecutorial decision,” he added.

According to her Twitter account, Duduzile was told her arrest will probably take place “Hollywood Style” on a Friday.

She believes the State would consider denying her bail, however, “There might be some pressure” to release her. Ultimately, she would be released with the condition that she stays off social media, especially Twitter.

For what it is worth, all the suspects recently arrested by the Hawks were granted bail of R3000 each – except for one – with the condition that they do not post any information about the case on social media. The accused in the matter are due back in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 26 August.

Daddy dearest, Jacob Zuma, also weighed in on the matter via his Foundation, which said the “persecution” of the former president through “rumoured threats of a Hollywood style, unsubstantiated arrest” of Duduzile needs to be publicly dispelled by the South African Police Service.
