Must be nice.

Dudu Myeni has scored a nice R

Former SAA Chairperson Dudu Myeni took to the stand at the North Gauteng high court to defend her name against allegations of delinquency.

Just a few months after being booted from South African Airways (SAA) following a host of scandals, Dudu Myeni has landed herself a very cushy job. The Sunday Times reported over the weekend that she will be earning more than R1 million a year as adviser to Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi.

Now, while you don’t want somebody who has been caught up in scandals at a transport gig advising the transport minister, it gets worse. the appointment comes at a time when government is considering moving SAA from National Treasury to the Department of Transport.

The Democratic Alliance has already responded. The party said that if the move were to take place, they would be very concerned.

The DA’s Alf Lees said: “One of the bigger problems is that SAA is now proposing to be moved from National Treasury to Transport. What that would do, would be to put SAA back under the influence of Ms Myeni.”

South Africa’s top banks have also warned that a move away from Treasury would see them recall R8-billion in loans to the cash-strapped state-owned entity.

According to reports, the banks and Investec have written to SAA introducing the new loan agreement that changes to its shareholder would trigger a recall.

The Sunday Times reported:

Maswanganyi confirmed there was a national review underway to move SAA to his department. He also defended the appointment of Myeni, who is a friend of President Jacob Zuma, saying she had been “highly recommended”, but would not say by who.

“I needed someone with aviation experience …  I appointed her as one of my advisers because as a minister I am allowed to appoint a maximum of three advisers without advertising the posts,” he said.
