A video of an incident where a police officer’s car hit a civilian has been widely circulated. Gauteng SAPS has weighed in on the matter.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng says a criminal case of drunk and driving has been opened against a police officer who allegedly knocked down a biker with his private vehicle. 

The officer was reportedly off duty at the time and a video of the incident which reportedly happened in Proclamation Hill, Pretoria West has been circulating on social media platforms. 

‘DRUNK’ POLICE OFFICER CAUSES ACCIDENT  

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the management of the police in Gauteng has noted with disappointment the video circulating on social media where a drunk off duty member in uniform hit a civilian with his private vehicle.

Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has condemned the irresponsible and disgraceful behaviour in the strongest terms.

 “A criminal case of drunk and driving and an internal case in terms of the disciplinary regulations are instituted against the member and he will face the consequences of his actions,” Mawela said.

The public has been urged to continue working together with the police in the fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or they can share anonymous tip-offs on MySapsApp. 

“All information received will be treated with strictest confidence,” Nevhuhulwi said.
