SAPS has released the latest drunk driver stats for the period from April to June 2022 – and they don’t make for good reading!

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has published its latest crime stats for the first quarter of 2022/23 which represents data for the period from April to June 2022.

While crime levels overall remained relatively flat compared to the same period 12 months prior, some categories have shown worrying increases.

Among those categories which spiked was those caught driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The stats do not make mention of the breakdown between alcohol and drugs.

A total of 12 942 incidents were reported across the country over the period, up by 1 978 from a total of 10 964 over the same period 12 months prior.

In the 91-day period, that equates to 142 per day – or an incident every 10 minutes in Mzansi!

In the April to June 2020 period shortly after South African went into Covid-19 lockdown (for the first time), numbers plummeted to ‘only’ 3 168 – or 35 per day.

April to June 2018 – 19 531 / 215 per day

April to June 2019 – 21 853 / 240 per day

April to June 2020 – 3 168 / 35 per day

April to June 2021 – 10 964 / 120 per day

April to June 2022 – 12 942 / 142 per day

Which is the worst province for drunk drivers?

Gauteng is once again the worst province when it comes to drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and is responsible for 5 524 of the 12 942 documented cases during the three-month period in question (43%).

The South African website is under no illusion whatsoever that several thousand – if not more – drunk drivers escape arrest and that the actual figure is significantly higher.

In terms of overall numbers per province for April to June 2022, the list looks like this:

Gauteng – 5 524

Western Cape – 1 993

Eastern Cape – 1 308

KwaZulu-Natal – 1 210

North West – 772

Free State – 697

Limpopo – 682

Mpumalanga – 653

Northern Cape – 103
