A mother from Rocklands, Port Elizabeth has received an outpouring of emotional and financial support after she took the law into her own hands last month. Veronique Makwena was left devastated when she found the body of her five-year-old daughter in a toilet cubicle.

The mother then conspired with a friend and her sister-in-law to get their own back. The suspect, himself a young adult, was accosted by all three women in their twenties. They managed to overpower the alleged rapist and committed an act of unspeakable violence

Despite their unflinching committment to retribution, the women didn’t murder the accused. He managed to get help and, according to TimesLive, his penis has since been reattached. He is still the subject of pending DNA tests, and could be rearrested if the results match what has been found in the lab.

The group appeared in court last week, but as the charity Enough is Enough revealed, Makwena was forced to stay in jail with her seven-month-old son. With no way of paying bail and left to care for a distressed infant, the defendant was left in a terrible situation. However, the organisation soon picked up the tab for her, and secured temporary freedom for their client.

“We would like to thank everyone whom helped either share the plea or donated. We would like to give a big thank you to Attorney Monique Carstens for her legal assistance and Advocate Nyameko Gqamana for going down to the prison. Mommy and the two are out on bail but can’t give more information on that for now.”

Their efforts have seen more than R2 000 raised for the vengeful mother. Many of the donations have gone towards items for the baby, and sanitary products such as nappies and bathroom essentials. A majority of the funds went towards securing bail for Makwena and her young child.

Who are the Enough is Enough group?

In the five years Enough is Enough have been in existence, they take it upon themselves to help families – and children in particular – find their way out of dire circumstances. Their mission statement explains their committment towards justice and protecting the interests of those who can’t afford to fight the system.

“Enough is Enough is a Community-Based Organisation operating since 2014. Due to the increase in crime, the need is higher now then it ever was to help the children find a better way out of certain situations. We will take on a new task each month, until we feel we have made the change that is needed!”
