Social development Bathabile Dlamini’s had constant news attention for over a year now, but for all the wrong reasons.

When she’s not telling South Africans to get by on a pittance while dropping thousand on five star hotel stays she’s allowing billions in irregular expenditure at her department to go unpunished. Ok so while her previous transgressions would have been more than sufficient to have her fired, it’s the looming social grants disaster that’s really at the heart of what she’s turned a dysfunctional institutional its very core.

It comes at no surprise then that the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is calling for her head. Cosatu also happens to be one of the three tripartite alliance members keeping the ANC in power alongside the SACP which has already shown signs of dissent.

17 million of South Africa’s poorest stand to go hungry should Dlamini’s department not negotiate a new contract with Cash paymaster Services to pay out social grants… interestingly, the DA alleges Dlamini knew this day would come as far back as 2014.

“The minister and her team in the department need to take political responsibility for this crisis by resigning or be dismissed,” Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said.

“This is not just an administrative bungling but it is a political own goal that smells of corruption.”
