Man drives 30km seeking refuge after shooting and attempted hijacking

A man reportedly drove 30km to seek refuge after his car was sprayed with bullets in an attempted hijacking in Hatfield, Pretoria.

It is not often we hear of such in South Africa! A man who was a victim of a hijacking incident in Hatfield, Pretoria drove 30 kilometres to seek assistance after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets. 

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday around 01:00. 

MAN DRIVES 30KM AFTER BEING SHOT 

According to emergency service, Emer-G-Med, paramedics responded to the scene of a shooting incident in the Hatfield area of Pretoria just after 01:45. 

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen said on arrival on scene a high end luxury motor vehicle was found parked in a service station peppered with bullet holes. 

The man was found seated in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care. 

Van Reenen said further information revealed the man came under fire from an unknown number of armed suspects in an attempted hijacking incident in the region of the Diamond Hill toll plaza. He then managed to evade the suspects and drive to the fuel station to seek assistance. 

The South African Police Services were reportedly in attendance and will be conducting the necessary investigation accordingly.

COMMON DAYS FOR VEHICLE THEFT AND HIJACKING INCIDENTS

The Tracker Vehicle Crime Index for the first six months of 2022 revealed the most common days for vehicle theft and hijacking incidents in South Africa.

Gauteng reportedly accounts for 61% of the incidents on the Tracker Vehicle Crime Index’s database. KwaZulu-Natal comes in second with 17% while the Western Cape is third with 8%.

Although vehicle crime incidents occur daily, there was an escalation in reported hijackings from midweek to Friday. These incidents usually happen between 16:00 and 20:00.

In terms of vehicle thefts, these escalate on Saturdays between 11:00 and 15:00.
