Delft: Young girl taken off life support after alleged gang shooting

The girl’s father, who is said to have shielded her during the horrific shooting in Delft on Tuesday evening, sadly also passed away.

A woman has been left alone to pick up the pieces after a tragic event unfolded in Leiden, Delft in Cape Town, this week. She has now lost her husband and her 13-year-old daughter after a shooting, that may be gang-related, took place on Tuesday evening. 

According to the Daily Voice, the young girl and her father were on their way to a nearby spaza shop to buy potatoes when bullets started flying. 

FATHER DIES, YOUNG GIRL TAKEN OFF LIFE SUPPORT 

While the father who has been hailed a hero for trying to shield his daughter from bullets died on the scene, the young girl also had to be taken off of life support after taking a bullet to the head. 

According to the publication, there was nothing else that could be done for her, hence her mother had to make one of the most difficult decisions as a parent. She also decided to donate her daughter’s organs. 

It is understood that the girl slipped into a coma before she arrived at the hospital. 

“It was around 19:00 and we were cooking supper and he went to get the potatoes. And then shortly after they went to the shop, we heard gunshots and when the shooting stopped, we heard people screaming,” the girl’s aunt told the Daily Voice

DELFT: ANTI-GANG UNIT PROBES MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER CASES

Apart from the young girl and her father, there were three others at the spaza shop in Delft that had been struck by bullets. 

Police, on Friday, said the Anti-Gang Unit detectives are probing a triple murder case and attempted murder cases following the shooting incident that occurred in Delft. 

“Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects started firing several shots on the corner of Umvoti and Sabi Streets at 19:05 fatally wounding three persons and injuring two,” said Brigadier Novela Potelwa. 

According to Potelwa, a 22-year-old woman and two men aged 39 and 28 died on the scene. 

“A 13-year-old girl and a 33-year-old woman sustained serious gunshot wounds. They were taken to hospital for medical attention,” added Potelwa. 

The 13-year-old girl that initially survived and was taken to hospital, has now also lost her life meaning that four out of the five people outside the spaza shop died. 

“The incident is believed to be gang-related. Anyone with information that could assist the police investigation is urged to contact police on 08600-10111,” added Potelwa.
