Rape Trial

South Africa has one of the highest occurrences of rape in the world. We see protests at our universities on a regular basis and our women’s days leave the country’s women with no choice but to protest against gender-based violence. Now, one KZN rape trial is yet another reminder of the horrors we face.

On Thursday, the Verulam Magistrate’s Court heard that the investigations were still ongoing into the case of a KwaZulu-Natal man who is accused of raping his stepdaughter 900 times from 2013 to 2018.

The court also heard that there is a delay as it waits for a psychologist’s report on the 10-year-old girl. The report on the accused’s cellphone has also not been completed and is adding to the hold-up.

The girl will now remain in a place of safety until the case continues on October 10.

State prosecutor San Barthu has previously argued that the man raped the girl 15 times a month in Verulam, Durban.

He now faces charges of sexual assault, exposure to child pornography, rape, sexual grooming of children as well as assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. On top of all of that, he also faces charges of child abuse and compelling children to witness sexual acts.

Local security guards and residents of Verulam reportedly beat the man in June after discovering that he had begun raping the girl after her mother’s death.

He has previously been convicted on charges of assault and property damage.
