News broke out on Sunday, 2 December through the National Sea Rescue Institute’s website, that a 31-year-old Sea Point resident had fallen to her death at the Chapman’s Peak Lookout Point.

The tragic incident occurred, sadly, on the victim’s birthday, as she was up on the iconic mountain, celebrating her birthday with family.

The Chapman’s Peak Lookout Hill, located on Chapman’s Peak Drive, Hout Bay, is a popular destination for many who like the landscape, picturesque view of the Atlantic Seaboard of the Mother City, a vision to behold.

Unfortunately, on Sunday late afternoon, at around 17:08, the NSRI together with the SAPS, were called to a horrific scene where the 31-year-old’s body was found meters below the Lookout Hill.

“In a high angle technical recovery operation her body has been recovered and taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket,”

the NSRI wrote in a statement.

This is not the first we have heard of tragic incidents occurring on Chapman’s Peak. The different types of fatalities that have occurred there over the years does make it a risky place to visit.

Deaths recorded at Chapman’s Peak

A deathly rock fall is not the only extremity that you may encounter on Chapman’s Peak. There have been cases of murder and accidental deaths similar to that of the Sea Point resident that have been reported over the years.

In August of this year, a woman survived a violent robbery in one of the mountain’s hiking trails. She was stabbed and robbed of her belongings. However, miraculously, she survived the attack.

According to the Pink Ladies’ missing persons organisation, a woman’s dead body was found on Chapman’s Peak, days after she had gone missing.

The 65-year-old from Plumstead was reported missing her by daughter, who told police that her mother had left the house saying she was going for a hike but never returned home.

The case is still open and police are still looking for suspects. In another case, Cape Talk reported that in March, a cyclist’s body was found murdered in the Chapman’s Peak area. He had been stabbed to death in an alleged robbery.
