A documentary by Al Jazeera, released over the weekend, linked State Security Minister to an alleged rhino horn trafficker.

In the documentary, called The Poacher’s Pipeline, Guan Jing Guang says he is mates with the minister. He goes so far as to say that his relationship with Mahlobo allowed him to go about his merry way without getting into trouble.

The Minister has, however, denied these allegations in a statement published by ENCA. While Mahlobo admits to having visited Jing Guang (who runs a spa/massage parlour), he claims that the photo of the two together was taken at Gaung’s request while he was visiting the parlour to get a manicure.

“The Minister refutes these ludicrous allegations with all the contempt that they deserve and reserves his rights in respect of those making such false claims,” the statement read.

“It is extremely reckless and mischievous for an internationally renowned broadcaster like Al Jazeera to be broadcasting such misleading content despite our response.

Mahlobo further said that a “number of comrades, friends and family” visit the spa and take photos with Gaung’s family.

People drop names of high profile individuals and take photos. Does this mean friendship or connection? I don’t think so.

“Since his appointment, Mahlobo, working with other relevant Ministers has been at the forefront in fighting against environmental crimes,” it added.
