‘One of SA’s finest musicians’ dies in UK car crash

‘He was our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and one of South Africa’s finest musicians,’ wrote David Leadbetter’s wife.

David Leadbetter died in hospital following a three-car crash in Bath, England, on Thursday, 24 November. The guitarist was born in the United Kingdom but spent much of his life in South Africa, where he was well-regarded as a musician.

“We are truly stunned and saddened by the untimely death of UK-born David James Leadbetter as a result of the devastating collision on Thursday.

“He was our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and one of South Africa’s finest musicians,” wrote Leadbetter’s wife, Michelle, in a tribute.

The 64-year-old was passionate about music and loved family, friends, nature, animals and life, according to his wife.

According to reports, the police rushed to the scene in Claverton Down Road at approximately 19:24 after the accident. Leadbetter was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to BBC News, the Avon and Somerset Police want to hear from individuals who may have witnessed the crash.

The deceased was one half the core duo of Deep South – along with Ronan Skillen. The group’s second album Heartland was released in November 2015.

“His music lives on and can still be appreciated through his Deep South, Heartland album, a lasting tribute to his talent,” said his wife.
