Social grants are administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) taking care of 18 million people across South Africa who received different types of social support from SASSA.

SASSA is mandated by the South African Social Security Agency Act of 2004 to:

“Ensure the provision of comprehensive social security services against vulnerability and poverty within the constitutional legislative framework”.

Update: Gold cards

Sassa has reiterated that its gold cards will remain active and valid and it only communicates changes through its own social media platforms and not those of individuals. Here is the video below:

  • Child Support Grant – R480
  • Care Dependency Grant – R1,990
  • Foster Child Grant – R1,070
  • Disability Grant – R1,990
  • Grant in Aid – R480
  • Older Person’s Grant – R1,990 and 75 years the grant R2,010
  • War Veteran’s Grant – R2,010
  • Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant – R350

SASSA payment dates 2023:

January 2023:

  • Older Person Grant: 03/01/2023
  • Disability Grant: 04/01/2023
  • Children’s Grant: 05/01/2023

February 2023:

  • Older Person Grant: 02/02/2023
  • Disability Grant: 03/02/2023
  • Children’s Grant: 06/02/2023

March 2023:

  • Older Person Grant: 02/03/2023
  • Disability Grant: 03/03/2023
  • Children’s Grant: 06/03/2023

Requirements for a social grant:

  • Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Must live in South Africa
  • Must not receive any other social grant for yourself
  • Must not be cared for in a state institution
  • Must not earn more than R86 280 if you are single or R172 560 if married.
  • Must not have assets worth more than 1 227 600 if you are single or R2 455 200 if you are married.

Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress

This is a grant that pays R350 per month. It is temporary and was extended to run until March 2023. Should your application be successful, payment will be backdated to the month you applied for the grant.
