The outgoing regional secretary for the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg Dada Morero has been elected chairperson. Delegates celebrated during the ANC Greater Johannesburg Regional Conference in Centurion following the announcement of the results of its new leadership.

Morero vs Mgcina

Morero was up against Acting Chairperson Eunice Mgcina. Morero initially went head-to-head with late and former Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Moerane. Moerane passed away in May.

To fill in for Moerane following his passing, delegates nominated Mgcina for the position of chairperson.

Former IEC chairperson Terry Tselani presided over the nominations process. Tselani announced the five top positions of the ANC Greater Johannesburg region on Saturday, 4 June.

Who are the newly-elected members?

Tselani said the positions would be deputy chairperson, chairperson, deputy secretary and secretary. The results for the position are as follows:

  • Chairperson: Dada Morero beat Eunice Mgcina by 10 votes gaining 153 for the position;
  • Deputy Chairperson: Simon Motha won by 153 votes beating Phosan Mngqibisa by 10 votes;
  • Deputy Chairperson: Loyiso Lungayeni-Masuka received 164 votes, beating Nomoya Mbokodo Mnisi who received 132 votes;
  • Secretary: Sasabona Manganye was victorious with 150 votes, beating Justice Ngalonkule by just four votes and;
  • Regional Treasurer: Maxwell Nedzamba beat Sihle Ngubane by 33 votes.

IOL reported that the newly-elected leadership will soon address delegates.

Mathabatha scored 781 votes against Masemola’s 389. The re-elected chairperson’s entire slate won their battles and makes up the ANC’s top five in the province. Florence Radzilani was re-elected as deputy chairperson with 791 votes to Livhuwani Ligaraba’s 373.

Ruben Madadzhe beat Soviet Lekganyane to the provincial secretary position with 714 votes to 451, while Nakedi Kekana was elected as the new provincial treasurer. The ANC Limpopo conference was relatively hassle-free compared to other provincial elective conferences seen across the country this year.
