The Democratic Alliance on Friday, 20 May, handed documents over to the Hawks. The documents contained protected information by whistle-blowers. The whistle-blowers alleged fraud or corruption relating to subsistence travel and entertainment allowance by Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament Masizole Mnqasela.

Whistle-blowers provided evidence

The DA released a statement explaining that the whistle-blowers recently approached DA Provincial Premier Aland Winde to report the allegations. Winde requested that the whistle-blowers make formal submissions backed by supporting evidence.

“On Wednesday this week, the whistle-blowers duly submitted protected disclosures, with documentary evidence. They wish to remain anonymous, a request we respect,”

the DA said.

The DA reported the matter to the Hawks for investigation. They included the documents of evidence.

“The DA has a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, and when evidence-based allegations arise, we hold our office bearers to account, without fear or favour,”

said the opposition party.

Besides reporting the matter to the Hawks, the DA also reported the issue to its Federal Legal Commission (FLC). The party says it will follow internal disciplinary processes with speed to ensure accountability. They also aim to respect Mnqasela right to submit his defence.

Legislation to ‘protect’ drivers against high petrol prices on the cards

In other DA-related news, The Democratic Alliance (DA) is planning to introduce legislation that will help alleviate exorbitant petrol prices in the country.

The latest projections by the Central Energy Fund (CEF) indicate that South Africans could find themselves coughing up R3 more for fuel in June. The latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) which is the key institution that regulates the petrol price in South Africa indicates that petrol and diesel could increase for just under R2 per litre

To make things worse, the general fuel levy suspension is only in place for April-May 2022. This means when the petrol price is set for June, the R1.50 tax relief will be added back on to the estimated costs. That will take out petrol price towards an increase of more than R3-per-litre.
